Stocksbridge By Pass - IMPACT pressure wins safety improvements

What is your view about the safety measures?

Over 20 people have died on this stretch of road. Impact think this is 20 people too many.

after improvements

St Ann's headed up a public meeting which was attended by over a hundred people. The Grandfather of the twins brought the meeting to a standstill when he recalled the day the boys died. A massive press campaign ensured the by-pass would not come off the political agenda and Impact kept up the pressure.A determined team made sure the police and Highways Agency were not allowed to brush the deaths under the carpet or call them a statistical blip. In June the team met with the police. Marie Hands, a leader from St Anns, stunned them when she arrived with 6 month old Liam and proceeded to articulate her fears.

before improvements

Work started on the by-pass at the beginning of October. The plan is to spend over £1 million on safety measures. state of the art cameras, clearer markings and rumble strips. The cameras will record the speed of the cars on the complete length of the by-pass, so if you think you can avoid a fine by slowing down for the camera then speeding up again, you are mistaken!

The team are continuing to monitor the by-pass and are now campaigning for a reduction in the speed limit.
