The Sheffield Council Scrutiny panel today voted out a request to examine the planning application for the new waste incinerator at Bernard Road. Once more, the clear divide between Lib Dem and Labour policy showed in the voting, with three Lib Dems voting for and four Labour voting against examining the issue, almost a mirror image of the recent controversial decision by the planning board to grant planning permission. outside the cathedral The only way campaigners can now get the decision overturned is to instigate a Judicial Review, which is a costly and difficult legal process. Campaign representatives at the meeting were warned about the implications of taking this action and were told that if the campaigners lost this review that the Council would almost certainly 'seek to recover costs from the instigators'.

outside the cathedral Andy Booth was at the meeting representing Sheffield Against Incineration. He said, "Once more the Council are looking out for themselves and denying the public the right to make sure this life or death issue is properly handled. The Labour members of the scrutiny panel looked more like accused criminals in a dock, taking constant legal advice to protect them rather than being the public servants they are supposed to be. There was no mistaking the thinly veiled threat of counter action if we lost the case. A Judicial Review costs tens of thousands of pounds (£30 - 40k upwards) . " outside the cathedral
